Crazy Horse Memorial

Located only 30 minutes from Mount Rushmore hotels, this memorial is a must-see if you are visiting Mount Rushmore or this is your first trip to the area. Best Time To Go: Afternoon or at dusk. Also there is an evening laser light show during the summer months. Hours 7 a.m. to dusk in the summer, 8 a.m. to dusk in the off-season. Open All Year. Night blasts scheduled throughout the summer months.

Directions: US 16A west out of Keystone to the junction of SD 244 (the road to Mt. Rushmore). Then follow 244 west past Mount Rushmore to US 385 (about 11 miles). Go south on 385 about 5 miles

Description: Open year round, the Crazy Horse Memorial is the Black Hills' second colossal mountain carving. Work on this privately run project has been going on for more than 60 years and is expected to continue for another 50. Visitors often have a chance to see work in progress as blasting and drilling activity is frequent. Special night blasts, enhanced with cans of gasoline for pyrotechnic effect, are scheduled throughout the summer. The entrance fee provides access to the Crazy Horse Memorial museum and other areas of the visitor center. The monument can also be viewed from Highway 385 between Custer and Hill City.
